Подробно

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) — analytics platform launched by Google in 2020 to replace Universal Analytics (UA), which was officially deprecated in July 2023. GA4's fundamental difference from UA — event-based data model. In UA everything was hits (pageview, event, transaction); in GA4 everything is an event (page_view, click, purchase, custom events). It's a more flexible approach and better for multi-platform tracking (web + iOS + Android in one property).

GA4's main features in 2026: (1) Enhanced Measurement — auto-tracks page views, scrolls (90% threshold), outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, file downloads — no extra code; (2) Predictive Audiences — ML-powered "likely 7-day purchasers", "likely 7-day churners" — exportable to Google Ads; (3) Cross-Device User Journey — Google Signals + User-ID stitching; (4) Free BigQuery Export — raw event data export (only available in paid UA 360); (5) DebugView — real-time event inspector for development; (6) Audiences + Conversions — flexible custom audience building.

Integration options: (1) gtag.js direct — 2 lines of HTML in <head> (easiest); (2) Google Tag Manager (GTM) — recommended for production deployments (versioning, easier updates, no developer needed for changes); (3) Server-Side GTM — privacy-focused, GDPR-compliant; (4) Measurement Protocol — server-to-server event tracking. In Next.js: @vercel/analytics (Vercel native) or the next/third-parties/google package.

Limitations: (1) sampling threshold — 10M events/property/month free; beyond that GA4 360 ($150,000+/year) or sampling kicks in; (2) data retention — default 2 months events / 14 months user data; (3) attribution model changes — UA's last-click → GA4's data-driven attribution (often confusing for legacy reports); (4) UI complexity — UA reports were intuitive, GA4 explorations + reports are harder for small business. Craftwebstudio recommendation: GA4 + Google Tag Manager + Vercel Analytics combo — 100% coverage at $0/month.

Частые вопросы

Which is better — GA4 or Plausible/Matomo?

GA4 is free and feature-rich but complex + GDPR concerns. Plausible/Matomo are GDPR-friendly, simpler UI, $9-$30/mo paid. We recommend Plausible for privacy-focused brands, GA4 for Google Ads-funded campaigns.

Where did Universal Analytics data go?

UA properties became read-only from July 2024 and data is being deleted starting October 2024. Export to BigQuery or CSV for historical analysis.

Is GA4 GDPR-compliant?

Not by default — IP is collected, cross-site cookies are set, EU data potentially sent to the US. Solutions: Server-Side GTM + Google Consent Mode v2 + IP anonymisation.
